The pattern is only for general help. You'll know how much you need for the heel only after the instep (top) is sewed to the bottom and you can put your foot in • so cut it extra large at the heel. Look at the cross-section, front view. It will give you an idea of how much leather you will need at the sides. Notice how the bottom comes up and around, and how the instep fits and is joined with the bottom. We have seen a last carved by Donald Garrett MacDonald's grandfather, Phillip D., used just for the shaping of the toe of a larrigan. It was good for both left and right, as the final shaping took place when the larrigan was worn. Wet leather would be drawn up tight around the last and tacked in place to dry. It would hold the form. Then the bottom could be slipped on a foot and the size of the instep determined.
