I was at the Meadow until I was married, when I was 23 years old. And then we lived at North Sydney for a number of years. Then my hus? band was lost at sea. He was lost at sea down north of Cape North. His name was Dan? iel Carmichael. They were seagoing people, you know; most all of those Carmichaels were to sea. He was a sea captain. He had been away, and he came home. And Captain Dunphy--you've heard of Captain Dunphy, down north--he wanted him to go to the Madeleines for a load of fish. And he went in the morning, on Monday morning, and at 4 o'clock he was gone. His body was never found. (Was he alone?) Oh no, he wasn't alone. The second oldest boy was with him--he was 14--and there was more crew on the boat, you know. They were hav? ing supper, and one of the lifeboat davits opened, and he went up to fix it. So, he didn't come back right away, and Gussie-- that was his son--went up and checked. But he was gone overboard. He sank to the bot? tom. And they threw him a rope, and he didn't seem to care to catch it.
