It took us a couple of days to get down. We picked up three of them on a floating pan, and one of them died before we got back. He died aboard the ship. You see, we thought they were coloured people with the blood ran down over their face where the glass--when it blew out the sky? light the glass cut their head around. The blood ran down and turned black. They looked like coloured people. (So you picked three up, one of whom died. And then did you get to the blast site?) No, she was gone. We saw parts of it. There was a part of the timbers on the pan (of ice) we picked those up on. But then we went on further where some of them walked ashore on Horse Island. We went and picked them up and hauled them back to the ship and brought them into St. John's. 's • roll on, roll off! The ice was terrific. We had to walk fourteen miles (round trip) to the island where some of the survivors were on. And haul them off on slides (to) where we got j ammed. That was a hard • • fci't'' walking, and rough ice. We had fellows ahead cutting the big pinnacles (off the ice) for our hauling in boats. We went and came the same day.
