through the fence, round them out, get them out on the road again. So anyway, there were fellows came along, going to catch the boat, you know, with horses and sleigh. 1 told them to tell the captain that I was coming with these cat? tle, and to wait for me. So, I suppose he waited an hour. But by God, you talk about hardship. You know, there was a lot of snow down then, pretty near a foot of snow--we were plowing through that. But we finally landed them there, got them down, got them aboard the boat. And the truck was still stuck up in the Lake o' Law. The worst experience I ever had was out on the ice. I was to Arichat. I was buying hides. This was in the winter. And I had a load of hides in the truck. Coming back, at St. Peters, it started to snow, and I was tired, so I put up for the night. And the next morning, everything was bright with snow. I said to the people in the ho? tel there, "Looks like I'm in trouble. I guess I'll be here for the winter!" "Oh, now," they said, "I don't know. You may get through. The doctor had a call last night to Soldiers Cove, and he was down on the ice, and he came back." Oh geez, I was scared. "Well," I said, "I don't know the way on the ice." "Well, there's his track. You can follow his track." And I said, "l'Jhere' d he get on the ice?" And they said, "Down at the canal." And I was scared of the ice. Because I was after losing a truck in the ice. I just went through the ice, off of North Sydney there. I had gone out on the ice, and down she went. I had the Model T Ford. The Caribou, that was the Newfoundland fer? ry, she had backed out, you know, she made a pass for herself. Sunday night she broke it. And this ice had just frozen over. I was there Monday morning. I had this lit? tle Ford, but the wind was blowing me out. I had her steering this way, and she seemed to be going out that way. An5rway, she just hit the end of the ice, where the boat had opened it--there was just a scum of ice over it. I hit that, and down she went. Oh, just a second, I got wet up to here. See, there was no top on her. That time, cars, they had little canvas tops. Well, through the time and rough usage, this top was gone. It was just an old wreck of a thing, you know. If there had been a top on her, I'd have never got out of her. But when she went down, I just j-umped away from the wheel, and I put my foot on that door there, and then the ice caught me here. Across the waist. The hands were out on the ice. She was underwa? ter that much then. I had a big pair of woolen mitts, and the mitts were out on the ice like that, you know. I went to put a little pressure on them, and I could see where they were freezing to the ice, and I thought, by God, this is not so bad after all. So I didn't panic. I just took my time, gave my arse a little twist, and I was on the ice. (Did you ever get that car back?) No. But I was scared of the ice after that. And they were telling me at Arichat, "Oh, The Qedit Union Difference. EMscover It For Yourself. Today. When you join the Credit Union, you become a member-shareholder, not just a customer.
