saying, "Oh, well, I'm staying a couple of years, I'll make money, and after I'll go." But he got sick, he can't go. But the whole thing, in the five years--I'm count? ing him sick, that's all. After the doctor took him to the hospital the third time, he stayed a couple of months and he died. Now I had three children, I'm sending to school. (Was the church any help to you?) No. The church came around collecting money. The man came every Monday, for the church, col? lecting. A couple of times, I gave. After, I'm saying, "You know that my husband's not working, how'm I to give you collec? tion? I don't have money; I have three children." No help, nothing. For Christ? mas, my children had nothing; Salvation Ar? my brought stockings for my children. Yes. And the Salvation Army, when they make a collection, they come to my door now and I'm giving them money all the time. I'm not forgetting them, (And you were Catho? lic.) Yes. (And the Salvation Army is not Catholic.) No. (But they remembered you.) Yes. And the Salvation Army went to the hospital all the time, sometimes shaved my husband, give him a nice haircut, every? thing- -for nothing. (Good is good.) Oh yes, that's beautiful. And I'm not forgetting the collection for Salvation Army when they'll be at my door. The priest didn't come, no. After, I had one boarder that was a good one. Mike Oleschuk came. He said, "Mrs., I know you keep boarders. I've got a good boarder for you." I said, "I don't know, maybe my husband doesn't want him." Just that this man liked to drink a little bit. Mike went to the hospital, to see my hus? band, with this man. And he said, "Yes." Next day, I visited my husband, my husband said, "Just take him. Just you want to live, that's all. You want money. You've got two boarders, he's three--that's a good man, help you maybe"--and that's the way I'm taking that man. And he helped me. And this is the way I lived. (He was a Polish man?) A Polish man, yeah. (He must have been glad to get a chance to get Polish food.) Yes. And he lived with the Polish people in the Coke Ovens. And Mike Oleschuk said, "That's no good for you, you stay all the time drinking-- you're working and drinking, you've got lots of friends--and no money." That's why Mike wanted to find him a good place. So I told him, "You come, my husband said it's okay--but you know I've got three kids, I don't want you coming home too drunk." "Oh, don't worry, Mrs., no, no, no." I said, "You've got holes in the bottom of your shoes." I said, "Man, what's the matter, you're working for nothing, you've not got clothes." I want to wash his clothes. I said, "Where are your clothes?"
