for many years, has had a very fine stone placed on it in recent years by a great- grandson, Thomas E. Ross, the present own? er of the pioneer farm. Thus Mr. Ross has very fittingly preserved for posterity a memorial to a remarkable pioneer in these words: In Memory of "The Little Woman" Henriette LeJeune Wife of James J. Jackson, 1984 (You wrote up "The Little Woman" piece in 1956, but then you continued to work on it. Why did you decide to continue to look in? to the story?) Elva E. Jackson: Well, it ' could have been because of what I discov? ered in the records of St. George's Church in Sydney. I came across Granny's (Henri? ette LeJeune's) marriage to Lemuad Briand. He was a man who was supposed to have died at the Second Siege of Louisbourg in 1758, and I found they weren't married until 1786--28 years after Louisbourg. So, that certainly would show that she very probab? ly wasn't as old as she was thought to be. (Is it possible that she wasn't even at the Second Siege of Louisbourg?) Oh, very possible, yes. I had heard about this legenday great- great-great-grandmother of mine from the time I was in my early teens. And for 27 years I spent my summers on the pioneer James Ross farm in Northeast Margaree, within 100 yards of the site of her first log house. It was a beautiful spot in a level valley, with the distant hills on all sides, and a spring of clear water nearby, that they were supposed to have used. Now J. L, MacDougall, in his History of In? verness County, published in 1922, wrote of her marriage to Capt. Briand, whom he said was killed in 1758 at the Second Siege of Louisbourg. And Granny's story had become so familiar to me, through hear? ing it told so often, that in 1956 I wrote it for the Cape Breton Post, which pub? lished it as a full-page article. Legend 4'%.
