The pursed net gets smaller; the smelt are gathered at the trail & rolled out onto the ice. Then the net goes back in, trail first. With a pole about 10 ft. back, they feel the net going back into shape with the tide--then open the trap for another set. NOTE ON ISSUE 39: Our thanks to Arthur Lockerbie, Sydney, who wrote: "Peter Em- berley was a real person...working in the woods near Boiestown on the Southwest Miramichi River (New Brunswick) when he was hurt and died." In Issue 39 we should have said that the author of "The Dream" permitted an old man's memory to locate the song in Cape Breton rather than Peter Emberley's native Prince Edward Island.
