sick. It was almost daylight when we final? ly landed in Baddeck. I never got to Sydney. Years later, I did see Niagara Falls. I went with somebody else. And I remember writing to a young fellow who was boarding here, a teacher. I said, "Well, I'm having my hone5niioon--next year George can come!" So we never had a honeymoon, really. I nev? er had a diamond, nor a honeymoon, or any? thing like that. (Well, obviously, those weren't the things you were looking for. What were you look? ing for with George?) He was interesting, he was interesting. We have had some very hard times, but we've had some very inter? esting ones. And we had a hell of a lot of laughing, really. And every day, we fought. Not the first 2 or 3 years--I don't think we ever fought until after our daughter was bom. And then I worried that she'd starve, or she'd do this or that. That's when George went to work at Point Edward. And he was away for so long, he missed see? ing her in the crib and everything. She was standing up when he came home. He had to stay away that first Christmas, too. And I remember he was going to come home, I believe it was her first birthday. And the man drove by • he was going out to Mid? dle River, and he was going to pick George up and take him. And he went by and didn't pick him up, whether he forgot or what. George walked to Baddeck, game-legged--got home in daylight. He lay down on a bridge ' down there somewhere and slept for about a half hour. And then he went back to work at suppertime and worked all that night firing the boiler. So he was so determined. Another time he came up, I remember, after he had got a car. It was icy. And the lights went out, and he drove all the way with no lights, with his head out. Had a flashlight, and watching the line! Oh, and it was so slippery--oh, lord. When he was going to do something, he was going to do it. And that wasn't easy to live with, when I didn't think he should do what he should do, lots of times. It wasn't easy, I'm telling you. (So you fought a little bit.) Not a little bit. Practically every day, you know. And I miss it so much. I really do miss it so much, you know. We never went to bed mad at each other. And I fought with him a whole lot more the last few years, 'cause one of the girls down there told me that George kept at me and kept at me till I blew my stack. Then he'd go in the other room with a smile on his face. Then I started to blow my stack right away and get it over with. It's a queer marriage. 46 years we had. And he was never one, you know, to be sentimental or anything. But you know, I have a couple of nice cards he gave me the last few years that really were something. And mean. He would never, you know--I'd say we ought to have a party or something to celebrate.
