To give an example of scordatura fiddling, and to at the same time give a sense of the ideas a num? ber of fiddlers have brought to a single tune, Paul Cranford has notated two versions of "Christy Campbell." "Christy Campbell" appears in TRADITION? AL CELTIC FIDDLE MUSIC OF CAPE BREfON • and it's there in standard notation. Paul's first version is very similar to the one given in the book, "ex? cept that it's in scordatura notation, with a coup? le of extra cuts. This system of notation is very simple to use. The fiddler simply retunes his fid? dle as indicated before the key signature and fin? gers as if in standard notation. It's based on the Dunlay/Reich setting; theirs is based on Carl Mac- Kenzie's playing, and Carl MacKenzie, I suspect, learned it from a tape of Angus Chisholm."
