in the Clyburn and what had happened. The (miners), they only stayed in the summer? time. In the fall of the year the ships coming down from the Labrador coast--mostly whaling boats and fishing boats--would come into Ingonish and load up and take the peo? ple back to Portugal along with the gold that they had accumulated over the summer. Well, when they returned one fall, they found nothing of the miners. But they had lived in the house that origi? nally belonged to my grandfather--or the one my grandfather had originally belonged to them, rather--and later on when they were going through the belongings they had never looked at, they knew there was an old book with a leather cover. Well, through time the leather cover which had been bound with leather bindings had deteriorated. The cover fell apart, and inside was a map showing that gold had been buried under the doorstep, under the kellick stone. So the arrangement was made that she would go there--locate the house--locate the stone, and have everything all arranged so that when the ship returned to pick her up in the fall, she'd be able to give directions exactly where it was. And this is how the Portuguese came to recover the gold that was buried under the step. It was my Uncle Jim who told me this story. After World War One he became alcoholic. He never ever discussed things like this story very much except in the early drinking-- when he had a few drinks. And he died in 1929, and he related this story to me as I remember it in 1929 before he died. But he owned that tract of land--I forget how many acres--this one had 58 acres in the origi? nal grant. It started over--you know where the Esso service station is--and it went over and included where the park entrance is, and it went back over the mountain and included (part of) the Clyburn Valley. So my great-grandfather left the Clyburn lot of land to my grandfather--that would be John Doucette--and that took in--well, the only piece that was left then that would be still in possession of the Doucette family would be the piece of land this side of the swinging bridge (over the Clyburn River).
