When the play-offs came in Cape Breton, this is where people went. And it started to get noticed, and the crowds started coming out. The play-offs in North Sydney, we packed the rinks--both rinks. Then we moved into Sydney--and they really packed the rinks there, in both places. Glace Bay and Sydney. (What makes it good hockey?) The spirit. The friendships. We all knew that we had to go to work the next morning. And in? stead of taking a real good--a cheap shot, as we called it--a cheap shot at a person, you'd let him go. For the simple reason you'd have to eat a meal tomorrow down the street, working at his job and you'd be at your job. So you didn't jeopardize that in any way, or tried not to. But it was ex? citing hockey; it was wide-open hockey. It FOREST FIRE! Last year between April and October, 26 forest fires were reported in Cape Breton. Fortunately, fast action by Lands and Forests crews and volunteer firefighters put them out before they did much damage. Because even a small brush fire can get out of control and ignite nearby trees in seconds, eariy detection is essential.
