their samples in trunks: dresses, men's wear, shoes, hardware--everything. And open up a sample room, and the people would come from the stores down and take their orders. That's the way they did it then. And they were using the cab all the time. They'd just call from the sample room, "Tell Charlie to come over to Sample Room 10." He'd send them down by cab. It was busy. Then they always had parties there, you know. And the people then would get you to bring them there and then you'd bring them back. It built up, you know.... (So you weren't going down the streets looking for business.) No. All came to me. If I took anybody to the Pier--no radios then--I'd have to come back to get my next call at the hotel. Unless somebody hailed me--but that was very little. A little different on Saturday night on Charlotte Street. People would holler to you. 'Cause it was the big night on Char? lotte Street. Saturday night on Charlotte Street, it was called. Everybody shopping, that was in the city. I've seen me leave the hotel. And I'd be coming down George Street by Prince. And the people going to the south end, Argyle and Ashby--you'd think it was an army on the sidewalk--3 and 4 abreast. At 11, 12, and 1 o'clock in the night. The stores stayed open till 1 o'clock, Saturday night. (And was there any other place, really, to shop, or was Charlotte Street...?) Char? lotte. There were a few grocery stores on George, and a couple of grocery stores at Ashby. But not clothing or footwear or drugstores--they were all on Charlotte.
