noon before or after their nap. She'd probably take out songbooks and they'd sing. She'd say, "Do you remember this one, Jimmy?" And they'd sing like that, together--just the two of them. (Helen, you know, so many of the songs are sad. So many of the songs are drownings, things like that. Somehow I think that your lives were a lot like the songs. Tell me again--you were saying that Dr. Austin Mac? Donald kind of saved your life. And saved your baby, I guess. What had happened? You were pregnant. How long ago was that?) Hel- sn: Forty-one years. She was born in 1944. (You must have been around in your eighth month then.) When they heard, when I got (news of) my brother's body, is it? (Yes.) Well, she was born the 25th day of June. That was the day she was born on. And they found his body around the 8th or the 9th of May--somewheres around that. I just forget the exact day, but I think that was (the) time they got his body. Well, I kind of--it was a shock to me. Well, I went in labour. I thought the ba? by' d be born. The only car around, the priest had it down here. And I said to Jimmy, "You go down." It was a priest by the name of Gillis, and he was awful nice to me. So I said, "You'd better go down and ask for the loan of the car." And I got a MacNeil fellow, a great friend of ours, to drive. So they took me out. (How did you find out about the drowning?) One of my children came from school. And said, "They found a boy--a man on the shore. And he had his arms off and his head." They said, "Mommy, his name is Wil- liam Dunphy." Oh. I said, "My God, my poor mother." That's what I thought, of her. You know, to think of her. So, I went in labour. So they took me out there. That was the worst needle I ever got. I don't mind needles. He gave it to me in the thigh here. And he said, "Whatever you do, don't jump." Dr. MacDonald. And he was telling (his wife) Marie to hold my leg so I wouldn't. The next day I don't hardly remember anything. And the nurse came in-- she's a girl from here--she was nursing, a registered nurse. And I thought I was floating between the ceiling. (But the baby was all right?) Oh, yes. He was so good, you know, he got me all fixed up. (So it stopped the labour.) Oh, yes.
