fish plants, they used to buy the fish from you--(and) they had the (local) store. And then they gave you, if you wanted a shirt, and what account (you had, it) was charged up against that account. I don't know how often or how much money you ever got. But you didn't know where you were (that is, how much money you actually had in your account). You know, they took their word for it, there was so much fish. And this is the type of life they lived. You know, they didn't go too much past there because they didn't come in too much to Sydney at that time. You see, to come into Sydney was an ordeal. Years ago. it used to be an ordeal to come in from Glace Bay to Sydney. The roads were just narrow roads. In places, even with a horse-and- wagon, there was just enough (space for) one way, one path. It wasn't like two car or horses could pass by.... The first time I took my horse in to Meat Cove. But I had a big heavy express wagon. It's not like those driving wagons. And I remember coming around this turn like this. But it wasn't wide enough for the wagon to make the turn. And I was only a youngster. And I remember laying on the ground and pulling the wheels away from the rock. Then move the horse ahead, and move the wagon just enough. And then I re? member, as soon as you made a turn, there was a downhill and a little bridge, to go up there. See, I remember--then coming up, I had a lot of trouble with coming up. And I allowed myself more, to be further away from the rock. 'Cause this was the first time. So (on the way) back, I already fig? ured out a little bit, it was a lot easi? er. This is how the roads were. Then I remember going from Meat Cove to the place they call Lowlands. There was at Richmond County's Route 4 "I took the road less travelled by ...and that has made all the difference.** -Robert Frost SPECIALIZING IN HOME-STYLE COOKING Parker's RESTAURANT Sunday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday & Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. FULLY LICENSED • FAMILY DINING St. Peter's The convenience of modern accommodations in the charm of an historic village at INN ON THE CANAL St. Peter's 20 Motel Units Licensed Dining Lounge • Cable T.V.
