strong Christian and an elder in the church." He said, "I pray to God," he said, "for fine weather," he said, "and you pray for rain," he said, "and God lis? tened to you. He wouldn't listen to me." For a long time you heard him talking about it: "The Lord listened to you and wouldn't listen to me. It rained." So they all knew. I never--in all my life since, I never made it a point to deny I was a Jew. Once I didn't say (I was a Jew), in which I should have. I was in the army. And I know we were working at night, I was there, and about 4 desks from me, there was a major there. And this chap walked by. You know, I just saw him walking by-- you know, fellow in uniform. And I heard him say, "I can't do it." And, "I can't do it." So I turned around, I looked at him. But I didn't see anybody else, you know. I said, "You can't do what?" He said, "I can't recommend him for a commission." And I said, "Why?" I don't think he even real? ized- -he was just talking, you know. And he said, "He's a Jew." This was a ser? geant, and he didn't want to recommend him. And I didn't say I was a Jew. It bothered me for a long time after. But he didn't want to recommend him because he was a Jew.... I#l Canada 90 But those times when I (make a speech)-- sometimes I'll go in there, "I want to wish you a Happy Jewish New Year." There's certain people, they don't like Jews, and I know it. There's certain people that I know would ask me to go to their house, I'm not too fussy. The next one, I'll go. But you know it. And I knew my spot, my place, all those years--where I'm wanted and where I'm not wanted. You know, I'm just--my makeup is that I can smell it or feel it. And this is a way of living. And I've always been proud of being a Jew.... Then--there was a MacLeod fellow and a Morrison fellow. Couple of times they helped me carry the pack on Smokey, they felt so sorry for me. You know, so hot.... I made very, very close friends. When I first started there--I'm not going to men? tion the name, I'll just say the place. It's on this side of Bay St. Lawrence. I was there, and a man gave me $7000 to put in the bank. And I said, "Look, you don't know me, nothing...." "Look," he said, "I want to give you the money." He said, "I don't want to put it in the bank." So I brought it and I had it I don't know for how long. It was driving me crazy, and I wanted to put it in a bank. (Take it to Sydney?) Yeah. So I had the $7000, hiding it in my shoes and the mattress, and the whole thing. Every day it was just like my prayers. So, a few years back--oh, quite a few years back--he was in the hospital in Neil's Harbour. So my wife and I went to see him. So he was (reminded) about this. It took me I don't know how many years, I got him to put the money in the Bank of Nova Scotia (in Ingonish), to open up an account. He was sick in the hospital, and he was still telling my wife, he'd rather trust me than trust a bank. After I don't know how many years.... Another time--who was it? I sold the fel? low a suit. And he had no money. He gave me a piece of paper, to give me like $32.50, to go to the bank, and his bank? book. He signed his name. So I went to the bank. And I remember the boy, the fellow at the bank said, "I'll mail it to him"-- (bank)book. I said, "No. You give me $32.50. And write it in."
