the forbidding banks of the Red Deer River was quite a problem. And -tfee__austom was for at least two or three teams to nego-__' tiate the (crossing) together by hitching the team from one wagon to the team of the second wagon, and the four horses pulling that wagon across the river, and then go? ing back for the other wagons and so on. And this was repeated until all the loads were taken over. Remember there were no roads, it was just open prairie. Now my father would not bring my mother to live in a sod shack. So every piece of lumber, every nail in our small house was hauled from Brooks. So it was time for Mother and me to join my father. One fine June day--North Station in Bos? ton- -we bid a sad, tearful good-bye to our beloved family. We reached Montreal, transferred to the C.P.R., and had tourist accommodations--very comfortable. Three days later we reached Winnipeg, changing trains to the C.N.R., a day coach which took us to Saskatoon. Then from there, on the newly-laid track, and after a misera? ble night in an ancient coach with minimal amenities--it was really a freight train with this ancient coaeh attached to the rear--we arrived in Alsask.-'vrhich was the end of steel at that time. Alsask wag' on the border of Saskatchewan and Alberta.---,__ And there, in the late evening of a beau? tiful June day, we met my father and life began in the prairie homestead. He seemed like a stranger. (How long since you'd seen him?) Two years. I was eight after we came to the prairies. It was a very emotional time, I'm sure, for my mother and father. But it was about nine o'clock in the evening, but still broad daylight--something new to us. We (rode) in the democrat drawn by my father's pre? cious team of horses--Bertie and Fritz. And we went to the home of a Swiss couple about eight miles from Alsask. They gave us accommodation for the night. And the dear lady gave us supper--fried eggs and bread--and her bed for the night.
