Maynard Morrison: We started doing home? grown plays. We started doing collectives under Harry's direction. And Liz always worked on the projects as well. That was an amazing discovery for most of us, that we could actually write something.... And they also provided us with a theatri? cal format that would work for the Rise & Follies. The Rise & Follies was a show that had a number of short scenes and a number of tunes. The sketches took place in a variety of locations. And the songs took place, perhaps, downtown Charlotte Street. Or perhaps--when "The Island" was sung, there was a formation of the is? land, so it took place in some ways all over the island. But when we were working it out in the Ly? ceum--the Lyceum had a small proscenium stage. And when we were first blocking it out for stage, we put it on the proscenium. And it was deadly. Because you'd finish a short scene, and then there'd be like a set change--it had gaps. But Harry had done some theatre with us that involved multi- staging. What we did was we used the pro? scenium, we used a round stage, we used various stations through the room.
