March 1904 had its centre in southwestern New Brunswick and was felt in the Sydney area, so it probably also affected north? ern Cape Breton, which is no farther from the epicentre (Woodman, 1908; Leblanc and Burke, 1985; Ruffman and Peterson, 1988). More likely it was the quake of 20 Decem? ber 1909 which was centred in the Inver- ness/Whycocomagh area (Mcintosh, 1913) and had an estimated magnitude of 4.0 (Smith, 1962). Newspapers reported that it was felt at many points on the island, but not at Ingonish (Ruffman and Peterson, 1988). There were, however, no published reports of any kind from the Aspy area because it lacked direct communication with the out? side world at that time, so we cannot be sure whether it affected the area of the slide and may have been its cause. If only someone from the Aspy Valley area could remember experiencing the earthquake or, better still, have knowledge of the landslide itself.
