But God has provided for him-- and for all of us. So far. And I put my trust in Him. I'm happy here until the end. Whatever happens, I'm happy. (How many children were you?) We were only three. My father was married twice. He had one daugh? ter from his first wife. She was 12 years old when they both died with diphtheria. And they were buried in the same grave. You know, (mother and daughter) side by side. And then, you see, my father was there with nobody. He was left with the home, and nobody. It was an old house, though. So af? ter awhile, he got married again. He married my mother, Victoria Mauger. She was 20, and he was 40.... And he had three more daughters. So we were three of us in the family.... And my father built a brand-new home there. But this house was burnt down, because (one) morn? ing we had a thunderstorm. And there was just two claps of thunder, and one of those--it hit the house. And inside of an hour the whole thing burnt to the ground. Talk about crowds of people. Then my moth? er and my sister Viola and three of her children came over here and stayed with me until they got a house of their own. They got a house already built, and they hauled it across the pond. It was hauled over in the wintertime. And that's the little house in front of the church.... My (own) family (with Lennox)--we were on? ly three. I only had--I had--my first baby died at birth. You see, when I was mar? ried, I weighed 98 pounds. And two years after I was married, our son was born. It had to be either one of us. It had to be either one of us, so. It had to be. When he was being delivered, forceps crushed Two portraits of Ida by Allan Kipp of Isle Madame. Our thanks to Allan for introducing us to Ida Mauger and for sharing both his interviews and his photographs. his head. He never lived long enough--he was full grown, 9 1/2 pounds. Just ima? gine. I didn't know. The choice wasn't left to me, would it be you or would it be your child. But I think the child was gone before he could ever come. Now, for years--every two years I had mis? carried- -every two years. Then, when I was 17 years married--for a 7-month baby.
