have a lot.... And then, beside that, then there was the cleaning to do. Twice a year we cleaned--housecleaned. Spring and fall. The beds had to be demolished and the mat? tresses taken out and beaten in the air, blankets all washed. That had to be done. But there was a couple of old women that used to--washerwomen--they'd go and hire by the day. For a couple of dollars, or a dollar, two dollars a day, and wash all day long. And that was big money for them. So that's the way it went in the old days. milk. Eight gallons--that's where my poor husband got his heart trouble. Taking those eight-gallon cans of milk. He'd lift them up and shoot them up on the back of a truck. He'd lift them on a board, you know there, and shoot them right up into the truck. There's where he killed himself working at--if he never had bothered keep? ing cows, he might have been alive today. He would have been two years older than me--99--he could have, as well as myself. And all the years that--he's 9 years gone, and I've been here alone. We had little pigs. We used to buy them, we used to order them, and people would be shipping them. And Lennox would go and get a whole pile of little pigs. We'd get a little pig for two or three dollars. We'd have all the skimmed milk. Before we started to sell our milk, we used to sep- Iarate it. And we used to have the cream and make butter, and we'd sell our butter all locally. When he'd go with his meat, he'd take his butter too. And we'd sell that locally. But when it came that they were having milk, then, you know, the trucks would come around and pick up the milk.
