When they first come up they're green, but when they ripen and you squeeze them, smoke goes out of them. There's nothing in the world that'll beat a puffball to stop blood. We always had them in the house. Just take and tear a piece off the puffball or take the whole puffball and put the inside of it next to the bleeding. And cobwebs. When the children had mumps • I myself have seen this done • you've seen in the woods on the old dead trees a kind of a hard moss with a red head on it, and they call it matches. And it just looks like the old cardboard matches • you've never seen a card of matches • they were wooden. This old lady" went out and got all those matches off of that stump, and she tied them in a little bag or with a little string and put them around a boy's neck, for the mumps.
