That's why the CANADIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICE OF TOURISM is working closely with the tourism industry in order to ensure the future success of this vital economic activity. And travel in Canada.. .whether by visitors from abroad or Canadians on holiday... generates $16.5 billion a year for Canada's economy That's five per cent of our Gross National Product. Tourism employs more than 1,000,000 Canadians or almost 1 in every 10 people in the work force. Tourism is also an important source of foreign exchange. Visitors to Canada spend close to $3.73 billion a year These statistics are impressive, but they're only indicative of the sector of our economy that is expected to be our most important by the year 2000.
