So she would go to one house if a woman needed help or was expecting a child or was ill, and she would stay there a week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks. So, before the sum? mer was over she had visited nearly every house in the Clyburn area and Ingonish Beach area. In 1895 when my father's sister Mary was born, she gradually found her way to my grandfather's house, and she stayed with him for 2 or 3 weeks. And my Uncle Jim was a teenage boy at that time, and they more or less fell in love with one another. Then when the ship came back in the fall--the girl knew she would have to re? turn to Portugal. So she went to visit the ship, and she told my grandmother and grandfather she would come back and spend the night with them, and come and gather her stuff and leave the next day. So, that was fine. She saw her cap? tain. She came back, and that night during the night, while she was with them, there was a lot of noise. But you never got up, be? cause I think quite often with extra people in the house and a young fellow and a young girl to? gether, they didn't bother to get up and see what it was. The next morning they got up and they found their doorstep had been moved.
