But I came on the scene. And I suppose that the guy that was there previously was a very quiet type of a fellow. 'Cause I remember that the players used to say to me, especially perhaps between periods, "How about giving us a pep talk?" That type of thing. And I guess they had not been used to that. So that was another thing that...was one of the reasons. The other thing that I think--some people maybe not--but I remember one night we were going to a game over in North Sydney. And Freddie Courtney was probably one of the best hockey players that ever came out of Cape Breton. And he didn't make the trip to North Sydney. And I wondered why. And I found out later that he really had no particular reason for not going to North Sydney. But I do remember going over on the bus. Some of the guys, you could hear the murmuring around: "Well, Courtney's not here. I wonder what'11 he do to Courtney. Nothing will happen to Courtney, because Courtney is a star, you know. Whereas if it was one of us, we'd be knocked over the knuckles, or suspended, or something like this." And I had made up my mind that Courtney was going to be answerable for not showing up to that particular game. So that would be perhaps on a Thursday night or something. And then we'd be playing in Glace Bay on Saturday night. Saturday nights were the big hockey nights in Glace Bay. That's when--everybody turned out for hockey on Saturday night. Anyway, on Saturday he arrived at the rink just as if nothing had happened, and started to dress. So I called him aside and asked him why he had not been there on Thursday night. I don't know what the reason that he gave me, but it wasn't an acceptable reason. So I told him, "Well, okay, you needn't dress to? night ." So this hit him right between the two eyes, that he wasn't dressing. So I benched him. And he didn't play. And I think that the other fellows from that--that was the combination of reasons. I wouldn't say particularly that the Courtney thing alone, nor the fact that I had come on the scene. • Cause when I took over, they hadn't won a hockey game. And for the first few games--I think the first game I coached, I think I tied or something like that. Then they still went on their losing thing again, and then they picked up. So it was a combination of Johnny Read, and the Courtney suspen? sion, and my being there. That's what I would think would be the three main reasons why that team did turn around.
