And then I just read in the paper a week later, he's fight? ing (another fellow) in Toronto for the ti? tle. So, you know, things like that are.... So then they'd bring in another opponent for me to fight. Take you a couple of days to psyche yourself up again. You're psyched up for him, see, and then the let-down when it's cancelled, and then they bring in an? other fighter, and then you've got to psyche yourself up again for him. It's kind of mind-boggling, you know--psyching your body up is. If you're not ready mentally, it doesn't matter how good you are physi? cally, it's no good. You've got to have both--you've got to be both in good shape-- your mind as well as your body. Oh, well, I had a lot of laughs along the road. Had a good time and met a lot of characters. And that's what made it all so good as far as I was concerned. Yeah, a lot of characters. (When you were young, before you started boxing, what did you think that you'd be? come?) Well, I'll tell you the truth. I thought I'd always be a fighter. I remem? ber as a small fellow, 11 or 12 years old, I had a pair of boxing gloves. And I used to take the neighbourhood kids my age-- maybe a year older or a year younger--and we'd all go down to my father's barn. My father hated boxing, he would never let me box or anything like that. So I'd get the kids to (go) there. I'd send them home with black eyes, bloody noses, and every? thing else! Used to be terrible! Beat up the kids, and then I'd have to give them candy or something like that to get them back in the next day, so I could do the same thing to them! Gordie laughs. So then I used to beg my father to let me listen to the Friday night fights on the ra? dio at 11 o'clock. Well, that was late to stay up then. So he let me stay up.
