wasn't a trader like Irv? ing was. But I knew that he--you know, he's got to get the education as a businessman, and he did very well in business.... (What about yourself, Irv? ing, did you go to college for business?) Irving: I went for one year. I went to two universities in one year. Mount A for 3 months and New York University for 3 months. New York was supposed to be the busi? ness school.... (But you were interested in getting right on to business....) No, she was interested. Rose: I'll tell you, he was a natural businessman. I had to have him home. Because the business was growing, and I had the furniture. And I had no man there--nobody. So I said, "Irving, you have to come home. You'll learn business at home, that's all there is to it." So he came home, and then got into the business. (So it was you who decided he wouldn't finish school.) I had to have him home. And I knew he was a businessman, and he could get a good training in the store, too. He was the only one that didn't go to the university. (Did anybody ever suggest that you should get married again?) They'd get a good bawling-out if they'd ever mention it to me. Because, you know, I had 6 children. How can one bring in another man. and be the father to 6 children? I could never do that. (To whom--your children, or the man?) To the children. As far as the man is concerned--that was out of my mind, completely. My whole life was my children. When I'd look at them. and. you know, when Rose Schwartz with Back her children, 1950. I'd see how good they're doing in schools and everything else, and how well they be? haved in a town like New Waterford, where there were so many young boys at the age of teenagers, drinking and all that. And my boys were different. I was really proud of them. And the town, too, respected them. For sure. Because, you know, in those days among the miners there was an awful lot of drinking going on. It was a hard place to bring up children and bring them up right. (Did anyone suggest that you should leave New Waterford? Come to Sydney, a bigger Jewish community?) I know, but just the same. I was so near Sydney anyway.
