Winston himself is presented anew to both his loyal fans and to a young audience eager to hear the roots of Cape Breton music they have come to love. Classic Cuts is a dandy introduction to the achievement of "Scotty" Fitzgerald. From "McNab's Hornpipe" to "Crossing to Ireland" • the range of music into which he poured his heart and soul comes through in the genius that made the music his own • and his gift to the world. He was a staggering talent. The playing on Classic Cuts is awesome. His choice of tunes in creating a med? ley still seems impeccable. A devoted listener can sit back for over an hour of familiar, and yet new, Winston. And the new generation of listeners has in Classic Cuts an ideal introduction. Breton Books and Music is proud to offer Classic Cuts • 22 medleys (49 tunes) by Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald backed up by Estwood Davidson on guitar and pianists Beattie Wallace and Catherine Anne (Lamey) Hawley. A simpler 2-part setting is found in the Skye Collection. Johnny Wllmot re? corded a 3-part setting which he learned from a Michael Coleman 78. (Coleman called the tune "Jenny's Chickens.") Winston proba? bly adapted his setting from 1000 Fiddle Tunes. There is a 4-part strathspey setting found in Simon Fraser's unpublished manu? scripts called "Malcolm's Wedding." Since the tunes are both in the Dorian mode, those minor signatures would have necessitated additional accidentals to reflect the modality played by Winston. When we typeset his transcription, we used re? duced key signatures so that the accidentals aren't required. Medical Hall EST. 1906 .
