member as a little boy, there'd be a knock on the door, and there'd be a person there looking for--we called them tramps. A place to stay, and a place for the night. We'd take them in, and feed them. Next day they were on their way. (This wasn't just for the ferry--passing this way you mean, on the road?) Passing through on the road, right. (Between Sydney and St. Peters.) Yeah, God knows where, yes, wandering around. There were no homes, then, for older people. I remember Dan Alex Sutherland saying when he taught in Roberta, "I was closing the door for the evening," he said, "on a stormy winter night, and I saw this man passing. And when I got up to"--where he stayed, I think MacPhails--the man was ??csi'lngrahams United Fabrics, wallpaper, paint, custom draperies, blinds, & verticals PFAFF SEWING MACHINES Perfect for the ':f person who loves to sew ATTENTION QUILTERS: Ever Expanding Variety of US Cotton Quilting Fabi 213 Commercial Street NORTH SYDNEY, NS B2A1B5 (902) 794-4536 Go ACADIAN A TRIPS DAILY BETWEEN SYDNEY & HALIFAX 4i ARRIVE HAUFAX 2:45 P.M. 11;0OA.M, $:90 P,M, TRIP 72 - Daily pick ups in: NORTH SYDNEY, LITTLE BRAS D'OR, BIG HARBOUR, BADDECK, LITTLE NARROWS, WHYCOCOMAGH, PORT HASTINGS, PORT HAWKESBURY, & others (TRURO 1:15 P.M. So on in the evening they got tell? ing stories, and he said to the woman--she had been James Pringle's daughter, from the house down here. And I guess he was very strict with the girls.... He said, "We came up--one of the vessels was load? ing. And we came up and put a ladder up to the window. And you 2 or 3 came down and came out on the vessel with us for awhile." Imagine. It seems this man, when he was younger, was a captain, you see. And he had been into the harbour here, to get the geese and the cattle and so on. And, like a ro? mance had sprung up between the girls and --but the old fellow would be, he'd be downstairs, probably having a nap or some? thing. And they slipped out down the lad? der and went out to visit with this cap? tain. (But now he was no longer a captain.) No, no, he was wandering around, whatever happened. Whether he drank too much or--that part, the schoolteacher nev? er told me.... In storms, it was a big worry to Mother, the ferry. Because one day, she said, it was blowing very, very hard from the west. And the children came home from school. And this same teacher, Dan Alex Sutherland--he was here for years. He boarded here. He came in and he said, "Sarah, Dan is coming across." And she said, "I wish he hadn't on a day like this." So they went out to look. Came in and he said, "I don't see the sails." "Well," she said, "my knees got week, and I thought, 'Oh, my God! He could FEATURING LIZ CLAIBORNE FASHIONS AND ACCESSORIES TO U K bO U I I Q U E CORNER OF GEORGE AND PRINCE SYDNEY, N.S. 539-5859
