John and Annie lived with Mattie and Mar? tha for a short time, but the house was small for two growing families. So John bought the lumber from the schoolhouse that was torn down during centralization for $5, and built his house. His father had a horse, and they dragged the lumber to the spot where they built the house near his father's house. Later that house would be sold and moved where it still stands behind Martin MacNeil's store on the shore side of Soldier's Cove. This house they sold for $75 when John was sick and the family had to move to Eskasoni. John had a mastoid behind his ear and was very sick. The nurse took him back and forth from Sydney by car for hospital and doctor care. This became very expensive as they couldn't afford a car and a bus was too expensive.
