1991 Cast: Neil Robertson, Berkley Lamey, Max MacDonald, Bette MacDonald, Maynard Morrison, fiddler Natalie MacMaster, Matt Minglewood, Doris Mason, Fred Lavery Plus she got to do a sketch or two. Rita always was tremendously shy. And I think this is well-known, that she had a lot of trouble in getting on-stage. I think in some small way that year, playing opposite Maynard as Mitzi--as Cecil's wife--Rita did that. In a crazy hat. She was a riot. I think that helped her in some way, too, to work on her stage presence and become more comfortable with working on-stage. But no doubt about it, Rita was a great break for us. So that was a great year. Leon Dubinsky: We distill a lot of materi? al (working toward the final show). There is a list--a very fluid list, with two acts. And it begins with this, and it ends with the medley. And each act has a cor? ner. So there are four corners to this show: the open? ing number, the end of the first act, the opening number in the second act, and the medley. Now, what are those corners? All of those are impor? tant . You have the lead-off and the close of the acts. What's in between? Are the lead singers represented in both acts? Some? times you end up--"Max is singing twice in the first act, and not in the second act." You begin to under? stand the jug? gling that is necessary to give everybody their spots. To be funny where we want to, satirical where we want to, serious where we want to, touching where we want to. And at the same time, try in the back of our heads to keep in mind that it's really important for us to have a Duncan Wells song in there. If we don't, I'd be very sad, personally. I feel strongly that there should be an Allister MacGillivray song in the show. And if we're not really wild about what they've done this year, we'll go back, "What was that song we were thinking about last year?" Well, that was when So-and-so was in the cast then. Now we've got new people. And it's also three years later. So it's like wine.
