Or if you were coming home sometimes, the coal--the teamsters that delivered coal-- they had long, low sleds. Oh, about that long and about that wide, and filled with coal. And they'd let you ride. You could stand on the runners and hold onto the side and he'd give you a drive home. Thrilling! Oh, it was thrilling. The only comic books were English comics. I can't remember the names. There were two of them they had. They would come every month. About the size of the old Courier, the smaller section. They had two people in it named Potash and Pearl- mutter. But we got those and read them and read them and read them. No comic books, but we had all kinds of hard books. We had C & G MacLeod's Bookstore. And he had--that was what was called the Thompson Sutherland Building, faced on Commercial Street. Just below where Mar? shall's is now. It was a hardware store. But on this side of it, they saved about 12 feet of it, top and bottom. And that was the bookstore. And he filled the whole wall with books that you could go in and borrow. (You could just borrow them?) Yeah, you'd borrow them and bring them back. We did. And at school the teacher would go around with an armful of books on Friday, and you could take home what you wanted. I always had three! We had lots of books. Everybody had books. The best Christmases were when you got books. They were good days. I can't remember ever feeling badly because we didn't--you know, like, even Grade 11, they used to have trips--they went in to the steel plant--they had a tour of the steel plant--and I couldn't go that day. But nobody ever thought of going any far? ther than (that)--Sydney was a big trip. In the church we would have debates, too, in the different church groups. '''?'"P*?"'''''"'*''''??"''''- didn't get very far. But it was a happy time. I have all kinds of happy memories about it, you know. The other thing, too. There were lots of lovely dances then.
